These native medicinal plants hold an ancient knowledge and memory of the Northern Forests where they quietly grow. To seek these untamed flowers, one must enter the deeper woods with open eyes and soft attention.  In this way, one's internal dialogue recedes as one simply becomes present to the moment and environment.

The At-Risk indigenous flowers connect one to the wisdom held in the wild places of the land and one's inner landscape. Their essences guide one to more clearly face the deeper issues, old patterns and stories that have shaped one's life. These flowers encourage an awareness, clarity and vision in seeing new possibilities, as they offer support and guidance as one begins to trust one's inner wisdom and embrace life more fully!

Our salves, crèmes and balms are handmade in small batches with love and care from high quality fresh, or freshly dried organic herbs, most of whom we personally wildcraft or grow in our lovely gardens, local fields and woodlands. The herbs are prepared as a concentrated tea, or infused in organic oils in the warm sun for a few weeks. These herbal oils are then blended with local beeswax, or organic coconut oil, organic cocoa butter, specially chosen organic essential oils along with specific flower essences to enhance the final preparation.

Some years ago researcher/herbalist and author Stephen Harrod Buhner began writing of certain challenges humans and animals were faced with in a time of increasing infection by a host of pathogens. Through extensive research and clinical experience, Buhner offers herbal protocols that can be prepared and used for specific situations. He is generous in his information, clear in his recommendations and thorough in his research.

From this work and feedback we have received over the years, along with fine tuning formulas over time, we are glad to offer these hand-prepared formulas.

Through extensive research and clinical experience, Buhner offers herbal protocols that can be prepared and used for specific situations. He is generous in his information, clear in his recommendations and thorough in his research.

This listing of single herbal extracts reflects the information in Buhner’s books.  Our intention and practice is to offer high quality herbal extracts, using herbs that are grown and hand harvested in our gardens, wild-crafted in unspoiled areas, organically grown or offered by other ecologically mindful and caring herb companies.  We continue to search for more local organic sources and farms that are growing herbs that until now have only been imported from outside the U.S.  Each herbal extract is prepared with gratitude for the plants, along with careful attention and much care.

The Sanskrit word Chakra literally translates to wheel as well as circle or cycle. In yoga, meditation, and Ayurveda, the term Chakra refers to wheels of energy throughout the body. Many systems speak of seven chakras. In this Woodland Essence Chakra set there are nine central chakras, which align along the spine, starting from the base of the spine through to the crown of the head; the top chakra is like a Fountain of energy that arcs back to the feet. To visualize a chakra in the body, imagine a swirling wheel of energy where matter and consciousness meet. This invisible energy called Prana is one’s vital life force, which keeps one vibrant, healthy, and alive.

The chakras are the centers in our bodies through which energy flows; each chakra absorbs and distributes Prana / Life Force to our physical bodies. If the Prana energy is locked into a chakra — little energy can rise to the chakra above. Also, when too many unresolved emotions or memories are stored in a chakra, it can also become blocked.

These nine essence combinations were created with joy and attention in a meditative space and time over the course of a week just after the New Year, 1995. We offer them in the spirit in which they came together — in the hopes that they may support the health of your chakras, your mind, spirit, and body, and bring you peace.

Our Compound formulas are blended from the high quality single herb alcohol extracts we have previously prepared here at Woodland Essence.  These formulations were designed by Kate Gilday, who brings her 30 plus years as an herbalist, flower essence practitioner and Ayurvedic lifestyle consultant to the art of herbal formula making.

From the letters and calls we receive from happy customers, we are assured, delighted and grateful that these formulas have had a positive influence in other’s lives. May they serve you well.

Woodland Essence Flower Essences hold the vibration of the Forest, along with the individual nature of each tree, shrub and forest floor flowers. The deep wisdom, strength and healing of these beautiful flowers offers us support and love in our personal and planetary evolution.

Flower essences are one way to enjoy and embrace the spirit of a plant. In taking an essence you are opening to the particular gifts and healing vibrations of that flower and plant. The healing can occur on any level: physical, emotional, mental, spiritual. Flower essences act as gentle reminders to guide us in our unfolding, developing our own essence along the way!

Most Forest Floor Flowers emerge in the early spring light, boldly pushing up through the tawny leaf cover, the trees standing naked in the warming sun. Known as Spring Ephemerals, these woodland flowers emerge as bright lights in a season of hope and rebirth.

And these are the gifts they offer us - touching our souls in times of darkness or confusion, when we have lost our faith, our way, or have become discouraged; they offer us the gifts of renewal - of purpose, light and joy!

Our herb and flower glycerites are prepared with certified organic vegetable glycerine, a natural product derived from organic vegetable oils. Vegetable glycerine is colorless and odorless with a slightly sweet taste and makes an excellent base for plants rich in essential oils.  The fresh herbs and flowers we use to prepare our alcohol-free glycerites are harvested from our lovely gardens during the summer months.

These sweet and tasty glycerites are enjoyed by children as well as adults, along with those who may be alcohol sensitive.

We recommend storing glycerites in the refrigerator or cool place to extend their shelf-life, which us approximately 2 years.

An herbal extract (also known as a tincture) is a preparation in which the active principles of a herb are extracted into alcohol. This concentrates and preserves the medicinal qualities of the herb. We grow many of the freshly gathered plants we use in preparing our extracts or wildcraft from pristine areas throughout New England and the Adirondack region of New York. Each plant is joyfully harvested in season with respect and gratitude for its gift of life and healing.

Occasionally, we use plants that are unavailable to us in the northeast region. These herbs are carefully gathered by knowledgeable herbalists and shipped to us fresh or dried, depending on the herb.

Mushrooms have a very special place in a forest ecology. The medicinal mushrooms we collect live on trees which they help to break down. In the process of decomposing the tree fiber, these mushrooms absorb many of the trace minerals and other nutrients held in the host tree. The Reishi and Turkey Tails are known as polypores, while the shitake is a gilled mushroom and the Chaga is a sterile conk.

Mushrooms have a long history of use as food and medicine throughout the world, and are currently being investigated for use in many health concerns we are faced with in this present time. You can find more information in the book, Medicinal Mushrooms by Christopher Hobbs.

The Shrubs of the Northeast woodlands tuck themselves in among the trees, forming more of a social network by streams and trails, some moving into forest clearings and fields searching for sunlight. Their flowers call to us, often at eye level, inviting us in to touch and smell, to enjoy their beauty and essence.

This group of essences supports us in the ways we share, network and connect in our social lives- in our relationships, families and communities.  Each of these Shrub Essences offers a particular quality that may help support and nurture the healthy development of personal connections on all levels.

This is our Original Tree essence set that we began offering over 25 years ago. These essences are of trees of the Northeast United States, made in New England and the Adirondacks.  Through a shared dream, my husband Don and I felt encouraged to prepare the essences of the trees we had been living with, hiking through, climbing and sleeping under with our children for many years.

The Northern Trees, hardwoods and evergreens, stand tall and graceful, rooted in the Earth as their branches reach for the sun. Ancient, and carrying a resonance of the land and wild forest, the Tree Essences of the Northeast embody and offer a deep, grounded strength and core revitalization that nourishes and encourages one’s inner resources needed to meet life’s challenges. They also powerfully connect us to this northern land, promoting a sense of place and belonging. Each tree has a unique pattern and resonance that has developed over long years. You may find yourself called to one whose essence can support you on your path at this time.

This second, more recent set of tree essences comes from our continued time spent in the woodlands, developing deeper relationships with the trees, learning from and working with them as food, medicine and craft. What has had the greatest affect upon us are the special qualities and unique essence of each species. The Tree flower essences carry these special attributes. Through using, sharing, listening and observing, we have come to see how each of these trees can touch the heart and spirit of a person, animal, plant or environment.
