Preparing a Flower Essence
The instructions presented here are offered from my personal experience over the past 30+ years, and based on the teachings of Dr. Edward Bach, Suzanne Garden, Patricia Kaminsky, Gail Ulrich and many other pioneering flower essence practitioners. Gail and I developed the method for preparing At-Risk Flower Essences and other flowers you prefer not to take from the plant. Enjoy your experience with these beautiful and powerful allies!
To prepare a Mother Essence you will need:
- A beautiful sunny morning
- A clear, thin glass bowl with no decoration
- Clear Spring water
- Pair of clean scissors
- A gift to offer/ leave with the plant; a song, prayer, shell, gem, whatever you like!
- Possibly a notebook for drawing and information received
- Time; for the preparation and the stabilization process
- Dark bottle filled with 40% brandy for Mother Essence
To begin:
1. Choose a sunny morning. (Moonlight essences made under moonlight!)
2. Take time to be with the plant/ flower you have chosen (or who has chosen you!)
3. Introduce yourself and extend your awareness and heart to that of the plant spirit (recognizing the meeting of two conscious beings)
4. Notice the form and gesture of the plant and flower: Color, fragrance, abundance or singularity, deep-rootedness or airiness; what elements does it hold?
5. At some point you may like to draw the plant and/or flower, this brings you into an experience of focused awareness where much can be seen and appreciated!
6. Allow yourself to relax into the experience and simply be present to the moment
7. After some time, ask what you can do for the plant; and what the plant’s gifts are
8. Listen, with your open heart and mind: thoughts may emerge, colors noticed or sensations in your body may arise. Note these and write them down for later.
9. Ask permission to prepare an essence. Be clear and loving. If you feel the answer is no, pause, reflect and ask if there is another plant of the same species to make the essence with.
Process:
1. Pour water into the glass bowl.
2. Place flowers just opened, opening and fully opened onto the surface of the water. The number depends on size of the flower, you want the surface filled with flowers!
3. Instead of taking the flowers, you can also have a separate bottle of water and dropper. Place drops of water over the flowers, letting the drops fall into the bowl.
4. Place bowl next to the plant in the sunlight. You will leave it here for 3 hours.
5. Sit and meditate with the essence in gratitude and respect for a few moments, note any sensations or thoughts.
6. Return in 3 hours to complete your essence
7. Remove flowers and place on or near plant. Pour water into prepared bottle with brandy.
8. Place a bit of remaining essence by the plant, and perhaps have a wee sip yourself!
9. Once again, offer thanks and allow the experience to enter your heart and spirit.
10. Label your Mother Essence with Name and Date, and any other info you’d like.
